Computer is infected only when -
1. Virus (any malware program) enters in your computer and harms some files or prgm
2. Computer must be running to get infected.
If you have updated antivirus (like Norton, McAfee, TrendsMicro)
then you wont get affected in any how condition......(except worst condition)
SO DONT WORRY AND GO AWAY FOR HW MANY MNTHS AS U WANT.
-Happy Journey.

I'm pretty sure that viruses dont attack a pc just because it is turned on...
To make sure that it is not infected by any harmful virus:
1) Do not allow other people to use it while you are away (because they may use internet to visit site which are source of trojans and virus)
2) Enable a firewall or use a good antivirus program

No problem, just disconnect the internet cable & unplug the mains - protects against power surges too. Like tain says, I'd password-protect the BIOS too, in case anyone decides to try to fiddle.

PCs become infected when data is being transfered on the Internet so if your computer is not turned on then it cannot be infected because it cant access the Internet.

Nope, you're safe as long as it isn't powered up. I'd password protect the BIOS if I were you so that they couldn't even load the Operating System while you were gone though.

If you have cable/dsl internet it can. Just unplug your modem from your computer, you'll be all set.
Just for your knowledge: Cable and DSL internet are always running and viruses can be sent but not activated until you turn it on. They will be "held" by your modem.

no, nothing can happen when its off.
you could possibly be infected/hacked if its turned on but not logged in, so hide the power cable.

yes it can be infected. just unplug the internet cable in the back of your computer. you won't be needing the internet while you're gone. if you plug it back in when you're back, it will function normally.
i know cases, trust me.
