visit the www.hrsdc.gc.ca web site and you can learn alot about about the rights and rules in regards to who can ask

you do not have to give your SIN on resume's,
the only time a potential employer can ask for your SIN is when you are hired and only when your hired
a employer has the right to ask for a criminal record check, at my last employment i was required to obtain one on my own there is a cost depending on the province
a employer can NOT legally use your SIN to do a credit check or criminal check, or obtain information about you, etc.....they are to obtain the number for tax purposes only
always protect yourself from identity theft
in hopes this info helps i was a bookkeeper for 25 years and this included payroll

You can find out a LOT about a person.
NEBER put your SS # on a resume. You should only give it to a potential employer if they need to do a background check and you need to authorize them to do it.

everything....your credit history, your bank account numbers/history, criminal history, employment history, our society really relies on that number to identify people...so anyone with access to that number could use it for any purpose...of course they are not supposed to use it for any purpose other than to report your earnings to the govt (and pay taxes for you) and most actually only use it for that purpose..but I am sure there are some others that really abuse the info
