most PSU setup for the new connectors are a two piece. check to see if yours is one. If you look at it carefully you will see one end of the connector can slide off. If not, then yes. you can buy an adapter at your local computer store.

There should be a 4-pin connector (2x2) that you can slide off of the 20-pin connector. There should be instructions for how to connect it in the box it came in. If you didn't buy it retail, you should be able to go to the manufacturer's website for more info. Your motherboard manual may also have this topic listed.

it can overlap with the remaining 4 pins sticking out over the edge. these pins are just to provide extra power to more advanced motherboards.
check the manual of the board it should show which wires must go where from the psu and which are the 4 additional pins

Usually the power supply has that connector block
split into one of 20 and a separate block of 4. ( the
second block of four powers the processor ).

If you get the chance, take the power supply back,
and swap it for one of the above. That will give you
the chance to run both newer and older mainboards,
without forcing the plug on - some are a very tight fit!

If not, change your mainboard..

try plugging it in anyway. if there's a capacitor blocking or sonething, buy a 24-pin to 20-pin converter like this one:
