Initially there was no adult version, but then the publishers caught onto the fact that lots of adults were reading the books but covering them up because they were embarrassed about reading kids books. They realised that if they brought out a more adult looking cover, then adults would be prepared to read them in public - thus providing them with free advertising - and the adult cover was born (same book inside though!)

Firstly, your question should be rephrased; the 'regular' copy would actually be the children's cover. It is the adult one that is 'different'.
I think the reason behind the two separate covers is ridiculous. If an adult is ashamed of reading Harry Potter, one they are a fool because these novels have surpassed children's literature now and are some of the greatest novels ever written, and also the 'adult cover' still says "HARRY POTTER" in big letters so people still know you are reading. You just look an idiot for trying to hide the fact.
Don't be ashamed to read Harry Potter - I'm proud to read one of the greatest creative products of our time.

Only the cover is different... I went to pre-order mine at Waterstone's and all they asked was 'would you like the children's cover or the adult's cover?'... so thats it...

there's no diffrence. the adult cover just has a more subtle cover, so people wont be staring at you on the bus because your reading a 'children's book'.
