Live Honestly: The only way to be effective in your own life, or helping someone else, is an honest lifestyle. Dishonesty clouds reality, and occludes real progress.
Keep an Open-Mind: As soon as one's mind closes, it becomes unteachable, and loses its agility. It's akin to slamming on the brakes in the middle of the Interstate.
Sacrifice: Give in all things you do. Although I am not a devout Christian, the Prayer of St. Francis is a wonderful guide to this way of life. The rewards are almost without measure - and it's got nothing to do with religion. Check it out.

There is a thin line between SUCCESS and FAILURE..!!! Its like a hairline difference..! Everything matters in that fractional part of the difference irrespective of success in Financial or education or romance or love etc etc..
The thin difference in between SUCCESS and FAILURE is PASSION...!! Passion is called as a strong urge/ desire to get something done..Whatever it might be..!!
I'll tell u a simple short story to answer ur question the best way I can..!!
Take a vessel of water and boil it to 100 C. What happens..? Water gets boiled. What can we do with this boiling water..?? We can bathe, wash clothes, use for cooking rice, etc many other things..!!
Now, boil the water again in another vessel to 101 C. What happens..? You get steam instead of boiling water as the temperature crossed 100C. We can do many things with steam. We can use it to cook food in a hotel, run a steam engine, run the central A/C plant of a hotel, etc etc..
Dear friend, what I mean to say is, PASSION makes that 1% difference. Those who dream high, have boiled the water yet it boiled at 100C and, today we r with miraculous applications..!!
Similarly, SUCCESSFUL man shall take that extra pain with PASSION unlike the FAILURE person..~~!!
