I'm trying to watch an mp4 file that I downloaded and it won't let me watch it. It says that the format will not play, or else the "codec" is incorrect. How do I get the right codec?

Your machine simply doesn't have the CODECS to play the file.

Go to http://www.free-codecs.com , download and install any of the codec packs available, and you'll have no trouble at all playing anything.

I like the K=Lite Codec packs myself. I've never had a problem playing anything in Windows media player.

Windows Media Player doesnt support the playback of MP4's as per the below link. I use Real Player and it plays them fine.

mp4 are propritary files and cannot be played on WMP who is a propriatary program itslef.

You can play your mp4 with iTune. Or a multiprotocol player like VLC. I use VLC personally and you can download it online for free. Just google :VLC multiplayer
