I do not know. Americans just don't seem to be as intelligent and cultured as so many other countries. Personally I like reading and being caught up on current events. I don't read too many books but I love reading Newsweeks, Time, and national geographic magazines. Iam 18

I agree! I read non-stop and there is no way TV or the movies could ever taker over the roll of books in my life! It is important for the mind with the stimulation and use of imagination when reading.
I think, however, that a lot of people find it easier to relax in front of the TV after a day of work than to pick up a book. Also, watching TV is more social if you have a family. If a whole family sat around reading each person would feel quite isolated from the others...
My husband does not like when I read and really prefers that I watch TV with him...I try to read as much as possible (but sometimes I watch TV just to seem "more social".
Another thing I have noticed is that women/girls seem to read a lot more than men/boys. I cannot see why though!?

I want you to think about something for a sec...
You are in a forum where the literacy is a must. If (for me) you don't communicate in English ( written or typed), communication is impossible. And you're asking why people don't read.
Internet games are mostly about reading. Have you ever Played Everquest, World of WarCraft or Starwars Galaxies, just to name a few. People who play these games must be a fast reader. Even a decent typist as well, or they have a hard time keeping up. We call it " Chat ", but it's really just reading and typing at each other.
I believe Americans read more than they did several years ago. Just the medium has changed. I'm sure that I go through more than a standard sized book of text on any given day, while using the Internet.
Best wishes.

I think the internet and TV have taken over too much. Also, people with families where both parents have to work, are too busy. Work, kids activities, cooking, housework. How would they have time? I do not work outside the home so I have time to do a little reading. I would miss my books. But, for mental stimulatin there are puzzles of many kinds. I hope most people will do something or else we will become a country of numb minds.

Books costs money and with everything going up, they can't afford to buy books. However thereis the library, but maybe their local library have no new books.

Just not reading books doesn't mean we are not reading something.
We read Y! questions and answers, we read newspapers, magazines, advertisements, etc.
