Excellent question! Frankly because it is a symbol of affluence and people want to be though of as rich and successful. Personally I find diamonds a waste of money. One could afford a down payment on a house for the price of some rings. It really is foolish for young couples to waste money on a small, clear, useless (to them) rock.

Brainwashing - the diamond industry had very clever ad men do their programs that made diamond engagement rings the thing to have and the popularity of diamonds grew exponentially.

Actually, diamonds are not very rare but the South African industry - were most diamonds come from - control the world market to force prices higher.

Women want men to spend money on them as a symbol of how much they care and, as a physical proof they can show their friends, diamonds fill that bill. We know money means a lot to men and showing others they are willing to purchase diamonds for their woman illustrates how well a man can provide for his significant other.

I'd rather have a ruby, sapphire or emerald - they are much prettier and rarer.

That's not true. I'm a woman and I don't care for diamonds. If I was going to buy jewelry I would much rather have semi-precious stones. They're SO much prettier!
