Why do space and time exist or must exist together?

And what is the spacetime continuum that many fictional characters(eg. hiro from heroes, doc brown from back to the future) babbling about?

Think about it, if you occupy a specific spot (place) and then move on to another place then that means you have occupied the original spot for a specific period of time. From there you are occupying another specific place for a specific period of time. The opposite is also true, you are not occupying a specific place for a period of time which means you can only occupy one place for a given time period.
Once you no longer occupy that place then someone else can so there has to be a regulor which is the continuim, otherwise, there would be no way to distinguish from one person occupying a place to another and things would get all mixed up and confused. So space and time are locked into each other because time is the seperator, it seperates me occupying a place from you occupying that same place. The continuim is the regulator, as said above, to keep it all in balance and guarantee that time continues forward.
And without time the place cannot exist since all things that exist in our universe have a begining and an ending, which implies they exist for a period of time. If there is no time there is no existance.

Space exists relative to mass. Time exists only relative to mass also. The reason for these observations is due to the physics trilogy: E = mc2, m = E/c2 and c2 = E/m. Notice that the singular value that cannot change is the c2 one. This is because it is this value all things in our universe are composed of. This is the value of physical time. It is how long present time exists before flowing into becoming that of the past. These thoughts determine that all existence has a specific duration and cannot exist in any other manner - there is no physical past or future that those of the present may associate with.

humans made up time...
damn humans
think about it, we said "hmmmm... from now... until now.... ok that is a second" the first three dimensions exist unquestionably. the fourth dimension is NOT time, but rather our entire space curved in a manner in which we cannot see

dear... time is the 4th dimension that can be used in distance calculations as you said (the distance between earth and nearest star is 4.2 light year) so we used time as distance here
