You need:
1. A computer, I recommend a Pentium 3 (or Amd Equivilant) or above with 10 gig minimum hard drive, and 128 mb ram. It can be done with less than this but it is likely to be slow. The computer must be equipped with a way to get online, such as either a modem (for dial up connections), a NIC (also called a network adapter), or a wireless adapter.
2. You will also need an Internet service provider. You can choose either dialup (slow), DSL, (which also goes through your phone line) or Cable going through your cable company. You must have either a home phone line, cable, a satellite receiver, or a wireless provider to get on line.
3. There is software also that is required. You must have, for example, drivers for the Nic Card or modem (some of these are plug and play and the drivers will be included with your operating system, but not all). You must also have a browser, such as Firefox, or Internet Explorer. Of course you must have a working operating system such as Kubuntu (free) or Windows (expensive).
4. Finally, to keep your Internet running smoothly, you will also need bug fixes (which Windows calls updates), antivirus software, if you have Windows, and you will have to maintain your computer properly to keep it in running order.
5. If even one of these things are missing, you will not be able to connect to the Internet satisfactorily.

Most wireless providers have special cards you can plug in into your laptop. Works anywhere where your cellphone works.
