Where can we hope to find heroes for our times? The superheroes in stories of our childhood battled against tremendous odds. Yet superior strength and magical powers gave them victories that mortal men and women can never hope to win. Today a hero may be a world leader, someone of great spiritual depth, a neighbor who works to help others, and a person whom only you admire. Who are your heroes? Heroes, like classic songs, won't be clear to us until this time period is in the past. It was hard to tell who our heroes were until after they did the things they did, and not while they were doing them. It was unclear if FDR would be a Hero until after the war.
We have heroes now, but we won't know who they are for a while.
And there's nothing wrong with magical fantasy heroes. The kids know they aren't real, and they've always been around. Beowulf, Samson, etc.

The first flaw that hinders a hero from rising from the ranks of 'world leader' is that HEROs are self-sacrificing. Whenever it comes to a point where they have to opportunity to throw themselves in the way of the less-fortunate or innocent, they will opt to look the other way. Unless, of course, there is something they can get out of it.
Which leads me to the other flaw. leaders today are all about self-glorification. They don't (or won't) accept the fact that there is a power greater than themselves.
Don't get me wrong, there are heros today. THey are called 'father', 'mother', and 'teacher'. THe unsung heros that are drowned by the sea of egos we see throwing themselves in front of cameras whenever an opportunity presents itself.

Heroes are people like Nelson Mandela who spent 27 years of a life sentence in prison fighting for freedom to overturn archaic laws and government still employing apartheid. He was a rebel and freedom fighter like our own Revolutionaey war heroes.
Heros are people like Aung San Suu Kyi serving her third term of house arrest in Myanamar (Burma), a Nobel Peace Laureate and a political prisoner for speaking out against the Military Dictatorship ruling her country since the early 1990's

I think a hero is someone who makes a differnce. It could be a small thing that helps their community, or something that changes the world. Even if you make a difference in just one persons life, you are a hero.

My heros, are all those people who i personally know, who've battled against so much, been through so much in life, and still stay true to themselves, and happy!! So many people now days think they've got 'issues' so they feel they are justified to mope and be sad, those ppl are NOT my heros.
My heros are also those, who stand up for what they belive in, even if they know, they might get killed, embaressed, or put thru severe hardship just for believing. They are my heros, they stand up for what they believe in, and dont alter their faith for anybody. I think in our lifetime, we will all have at leats one person, we think of as a person to look up too. 'Hero' might be too extreme for some ppl, but everyone has someone they admire and respect.

When I was younger I used to have hereos like Katherine Hepburn - strong women at a time when it wasn't popular for women to be strong. Since then my hereos have either died or been discredited. Now I try to be my own hero by attaining my own goals.

when the dust is settled, there is one hero! and that is JESUS! when he walked the earth, he healed the sick, the lame, and gave love and encouragement to all mankind, and told us to do the same! the heroes in our society are the firemen from new york, and others like them who give selflessly! the greedy athletes of today, owners of sports teams, and hollywood people are NOT!! HEROES! the are not to be admired just because they have moneyand thier pictures all over the place!
