We live .8 miles from the school and they dont provide bus service for my 5 and 7 year old. If you live within 1 mile they just dont give bus service for non handicapped people. Is this legal? I have to wake up my 8 month old daughter and 5 year old to take the 7 year old every day. And then my 5 year old goes at noon. The school expects them to walk when there is only 1 crossing guard and it was -1 yesterday. Thanks Jason

You did not say which State you live in. Here in Texas anyone outside a two mile radius from the public school they attend is entitled to bus service.

First, anyone here who thinks that a 7 year old should be walking to school or anywhere .8 miles alone doesnt need to be a parent. In my city if the school found out you were sending your 7 year old to walk close to a mile alone they would probably call childrens services on you and rightfully so. Now that ive got that out of the way....
The rules are what they are. All you can do about it is complain to your city or school board. Maybe they will change the rule or make a exception for you.
Regarding handicapped, now i know i will get plenty of thumbs downs for this but i dont care. The handicapped want equal rights. They want to be treated the same. They say they are no different than anyone else. Yet they get special rights and privileges such as bus service when your kid doesnt. If they have the right to a bus service then your kid should have the same right as well.
Myself, i would try to make special arrangements. Try to find someone who is driving their kids to your school who you can trust. Offer to pay them whatever to get them to swing by and take your kids on their way. Offer to buy them a tank of gas a week.

I'm not sure, but I live on the border of two cities for my son's school, and the nearest bus stop is miles away. Furthermore, if he were able to get to the stop safely (no sidewalks most of the way and speeding commuters), I would have to pay $70 a month for this service. Talk about rip-off!!
You are probably stuck waking up the baby. I am familiar with this since I also have a 2 year old that is almost impossible in the morning. Best of luck to you- they will be older before you know it.

get a lawyer. your child is handicapped. your taxes pays for the service of the bus.

i don't think these people realize how far 8 MILES is. it's alot longer then 6 or 9 blocks people. i had to walk 8 blocks when i was in school. round trip. it's not fun. i had to leave the house by 5:40 am to be in school on time. i didn't get home until 6 pm.

Busing isn't a right, so the question of the legality of it doesn't matter. I did the shuffle-juggle for many, many years. It's part of being a parent, part of your responsibility, not the governments. 7 years old is old enough to walk .8 miles to and from school. Buddy up with some of the other kids parents and maybe you can work out a minivan schedule. I did that too.

School busing is a courtesy, not a right. Many communities have mileage limits on this service and many more of those have the 1 mile limit.

It is difficult sometimes to do what you must for your kids...but until they are old enough to walk themselves to school, you will need to inconvenience yourself and get them there. Sometimes parenting is difficult.

I think its a city by city thing. In my town if you live more than a mile away they provide bus service. Less than a mile you are on your own.
I undertand your concern and problem, but the rules are the rules. Go to your priority board or school board to complain about it.

they don't have to provide a bus...... and .8 miles is like a ten minute walk...... dress your 7 year old warm and tell them to take the Nike express to school. and then next year, the now 7 y/o can walk your other little one to school.

Jason, don't be such a puss. I walked to and from school 9 blocks in BUFFALO!!! everyday to get to school from the time I was 5 to 16. Pat your little 7 year old on the butt and tell him to look both ways. Its time to let the bird spread his wings, if he learns now then he'll be able to walk his brother next year.

Have you not seen "A Christmas Story???"

Bussing is a perk, and most school districts I have lived in they will not bus under a mile.

I have 4 kids, and I have done the morning jumble for years, welcome to parenting. The world does not revolve around making things easier for you.
