I believe President Johnson who did not approve of the KKK or anything it represents. What he meant by separating Southern and Northern Democrats is that at the time Southern Democrats were still very much Dixicrats, very biggoted while Northern Democrats were not or less so. Until the South could change its ways it would remain quite separate. Many of those Southern Democrats have become Republicans because of how the parties have changed in their civil rights platforms.

You ignorant twit. If it hadn't been for Republicans you are so fond of bashing there wouldn't have been a Civil Rights Act for Johnson to sign.

It was liberal Northern Democrats who broke up the Solid South and let the Republicans get a foot in the door. Once that happened Southerners found out they had a lot more in common with Republicans than they did with folks like John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, and Charles Schumer.

The solid South began to crumble for the Democrats in 1964 and except for native son, Jimmy Carter in 1976, Republicans have dominated the South. The KKK is not prevalent any more. Implying that all Southerners are KKK is just as bigoted as the extremely few people who are in the KKK.
