My turntable has no output jack. Should I wire one into the speaker wires and go from there to the input jack on the computer?

If you have good speakers and a good microphone you could do it that way. 78's are going to be mono so it's not too complicated. However, if you know what you are doing the way you suggested will be better and should work fine. Check to see what the output wattage is from the turntable and make sure you are not going to blow your sound card. You may want to try and borrow a modern turntable that actually has an output if you are going to go to the trouble of preserving the recordings. Make sure to start with the least lossy recording format to minimize the amount of information that you lose in the process. You can clean up the tracks later if you want to but archive the originals.
