Unless you are doing it for fun, you will do better buy buying a PC at that price. Look for a sale of old models or shop at a manufacturer's outlet website.

If you just want to try building a PC, you really need to price out the rest of the system as well and figure out what you have available for the motherboard and CPU.

Part of this decision is deciding what you want to pay more for and what you are willing to save on. For example, video on the motherboard is a good option for a low priced machine but you might want to save everywhere else in order to splurge on a video card.

Your choice of CPU will limit the motherboards to those that support that socket. You can go to a site like newegg.com and narrow down your motherboard (and other component) possibilities by factors such as price and features.

Go to the below URLs. They both have topics on building a computer. Now another thing. Once you see what it will cost, also see what deals they have in the paper. Here in the US, at compUSA they had a computer for $99. It cost $699 I think, and anyway, you got the rest in rebates. Also remember cost of the OS system. Remember Vista is out and take in the fact what just the basic system would cost you.

But you will be looking at a core 2 duo system, 64 bit. Also get it upgradeable to 4 Gb of memory. You only need to get at least 512 Gb to get started. But later on when you get the money you can add more RAM. Get at least the new DVD drive with RAM. Again depending on expensives. Get a computer case with enought slots that you can add to later on. Put a DVD in for now and later add another DVD drive. Good for copying movies automatically and you do not have to sit there and change disks. For me I would need two slots for DVD drives, one slot for the audio, slot for card adaptor. Now the card adaptor is something you do not need unless you have a camera using SD memory cards or anything else. And also depending, a slot for adding something where you can plug in a USB up front or your earphones. But have the slot so you can add this later.

Anyway, search both sites for topics on this. LEARN that with 4Gb slots how to put memory in. Yes, there is a certain way or which slots to use first. All these little details.

Good luck and may the chip be with you. lol
