Philippine sports is not that bad as you think. The Philippines has a long list of successful athletes.

However, I believe that to produce more athletes of international-caliber, it should take more time, money and efforts from the local and national communities and from parents alike.

As a Filipino parent, I am proud to produce a future world champion in swimming. My 12-year old daughter is showing potentials to be a great swimmer for having won dozens of gold medals in national and regional events. Next year, she should be ready for international competitions.

Financial and moral support from parents is very important for the development and success of a Filipino athlete.

They totally suck in the Olympics. The country has never won an Olympic Gold Medal in any sport at all. However they have excellent cheaters that call themselves boxers such as Nonito Donaire who was already exposed when he was completely outclassed and out-boxed by 2 times Olympic gold medalist and reigning 122 pounds king Guillermo Rigondeaux.

In regards to Manny Packiao, that is probably the only exception wherein they have achieved some relevance in sports, still while nobody questions his achievements he is far from being the best boxer in the world as a lot of pathetic Filipinos probably think...

If you refer to a team sports, maybe you are right. Our greatness in basketball, the game we loved most, collapsed because of disunity among officials. We were disqualied to play FIBA sanctioned games until only recently. There are too many basketball organization and they are not united. To each his own. They have their own game schedules, so that when its time to send our bests abroad, most players are not available.
For the love of basketball, other team sports such as volleyball, softball, and soccer are almost never given attention.
Also, there is no sustained sports program in the country. The Palarong Pambansa is handled by DECS, a government agency which do not even pay their teachers on time. Congress do not provide sufficient fund for sports.
Patronage system becomes the name of the game. To excell in sports, you need to have a patron, usually the moneyed and the individual politician.
Swimming and athletics which produces pride and glory for a country is weak in the Philippines.
But I tell you, when it comes to individual sports especially those that pays well, the Filipinos excell. I do not know why. Maybe you have a good guess.

The government doesn't invest enough money to give the athletes every opportunity to compete. Simple as that.

I'm from australia and we're probably the best sports nation in the world per capita. Our government invests milions of dollars a years in sports development and has a number of Sports Acadamies (i.e. Sports Universities) where the young people go to improve their skills.

If you want to be number one in anything, you've got to invest money. Without this investment, you're never going to be able to compete with the big (rich) countries.

Philippines sucks at everything. It doesn't even sponsor any major international sporting events like Golf, Tennis etc...Because Filipinos are keeping their fellow people from being competitive and prosperous...The CRAB EFFECT. That's why The Philippines is a backward country and cannot ever progress beyond potentional especially if the people keep on picking non-qualified people to run the country.

Firstly, the all the players are too short for your number sport - BASKETBALL but seriously, there is little incentive in sports, the real priorities are housing, education and making sure that the 3 meals a day are on the table for the kids.

in the recent Asean Football tournament, you guys came back with (-) negative points on the score sheet. At least you tried and nothing to be ashamed of.

We don't have that much funding for sports and most parents are spending their money on their kids education. So yes we do suck at sports because it is not a priority for parents, education is.

I want to tell you, there is no single sport that is popular around the world..Remember that Basketball is popular in America, Phils, but not in other countries..Soccer is the most popular sport in the world in terms of fans support but it is not that popular in US, Canada, Britian..They are not top contenders in this sport.

If bowling is a recreational sports for you..that is your personal opinion..Golf where Jennifer Rosales and Tiger Woods excel both, is a recreational sport for most people too..

Philippines most popular sports are boxing, basketball and bowling, we excel in all of them..take note that the Philippines is top 2-4 in Asian Basketball, Asia has around 50 plus countries..considering the height of most Filipinos..thats a big achievement..

Golf is not a popular sport in most countries..

no we don't. we have good and really capable athletes who can compete abroad.the reason behind this is that the government doesn't provide much support for sports, not even support the athletes. if only they can provide enough budget, enough supplies for the athletes then we could also be at par with the other countries don't you think?
