I have a mummified possum that is completly dessicated, just bones and hair. I want to retrieve the skeleton for mounting. What is the best way to remove the unwanted tissue? Just a note...it died of natural causes under our house, I did not kill the critter.

It can be easily done with simple boiling water -- it will probably smell poorly, so you might want to figure out a way to do it outside. But that will soften it all up so you can remove the bones and reconstruct the skeleton (just like chicken carcasses when making soup -- lol!). However, the bones WILL separate, so you better know your anatomy! (Did this myself with a rabbit, many, many years ago.) Good luck!

Soak it in lye. I've heard that that will soften it up enough that you can work the bones out.

whatever you do, DON'T disinfect it. That will ruin it. Use water and sandpaper
