No, never have had it done, and No i dont think they do all that well, if you can even find a vet to do it. Moslty the vet will refer you to an orthopedic surgeon and you are going to be looking at 500$ or more for a hampster amputation if the hamster doesnt die on the table from the ansetic. I had a pet hamster when i was a kid and it escaped and got into one of my moms rats snap traps. It didnt Kill ole Mojo but it broke is jaw in 2 places, the vet could do nothing but put him down, I didnt want that to happen so I took him home and just fed him seed mash and pellet mash with a syringe for about a year more, he always looked a bit strange but he lived through it. Could never chew after that incident. The vet didnt even prescribe me pain meds, now looking back on that i wish i hadnt done it cause i dont know if Mojo was suffering terribly through that or not. I would have just put him down.

No but my friends hamster got loose for a few days and when we found him again he had a bad fracture in his leg to the point of the bone sticking out! The skin had already healed all around the fracture and the vet said the best thing to do was keep it clean and make sure it didn't hinder the little guys activities. Now little Chester goes screaming around his wheel and all over his cage without a worry about his gibbled little leg. They're pretty resilient! If your guy is getting his leg amputated by a proffessional, then he should be back to normal pretty quick!

yes it can b done, but only if u get a vet that will not mind his or her record going down if it dies on the table, which as hamsters are so small is a very high chance. luckly i found a vet that would amputate my old hamsters leg and did it very well. Boe (the hamster) had escaped from his cage and managed to climb up abt 2 meters high...and jumped (idiot, related 2 a lemming i swear) shattered his leg and it was never going to heal, so it was taken off. other than looking like he had 2 tails he was a happy little thing and lived to just 3 days shy of his 5th birthday!! he then became an idiot and ate thru to his stomach....poor thing

It's funny you ask that, I work for a pet store and we had a hamster get his leg caught in a wheel. The vet amputated his leg and returned him to us in good health. We were unable to sell him and no one would adopt him ( he became mean after the amputation), so for a couple of months he hung out at our store and was well cared for. When we couldn't continue to keep him there, I decided to bring "Bielzabub" home where he lived out a good life.
