If yuo have an automatic overdrive tranny for that Accord, it means that you have four forward speeds...
"D3":you are driving in third forward gear(w/out going into fourth, or overdrive)...this is meant mainly for inter-city driving...
"D4":you are driving in all four forward speeds(including overdrive)...use this if you're on a freeway w/ speed limits of 60 mph or more...
HTH...

In an accord you must be seeing the patern :
P
R
N
D4
D3
2
1
Basically starting from top
P = parking
R = Reverse
N = Neutral
D4 = Automatic 4 gear transmission ( general driving)
D3 = when you are climbing uphill or other kind of occasion or you are towing something where you need more torque the transmission doesn't shift past 3rd gear, so 3rd gear is max and for more torque the engine will rev higher instead of upshifting.
[2] = same as D3 but here the car wont shift more than 2 gears
used if your car is towing some real heavy thing,
[1] = damn only 1 gear should be used in case your car is stuck in the sand or something and you dont want to go past 1st gear as moving the wheels faster is just spinning and skidding.
so lowest possible speed at highest possible torque.
Hope it makes things clear :)

D4 is for your everyday driving. It allows your automatic transmission to shift into all 4 forward gears.
D3 locks out your 4th (overdrive) gear. It eliminates "gear hunting". This happens when a vehicle is traveling at a constant speed and the transmission is constantly shifting from 3rd to 4th, 4th to 3rd, 3rd to 4th and so forth. Vehicles typically carrying heavy loads will exhibit this "gear hunting" condition. Use D3 when carrying heavy loads.
2 and 1 is used for engine braking. Use it when going downhill. It helps to slow down the vehicle without excessively using your brakes. Excessive braking will actually cause your brakes to fail.

the accord is one of the best engineered cars that honda has ever produced and if the one you are looking at has a sunroof and leather it is a ex-L model witch is the top of the line model the milage on it is good and the price is as well your are getting a good deal but there are two things you need to know the automatic trannys that came in the v6 accord have alot of problems but dont let that worry you the trannys in the v6 accords from 98 to 02 the 6th gen model normally go out between 100000 and 110000 miles but honda extended the warranty on them to cover this problem so you wont have to pay for it that right there is a great bonus because even though the tranny will go out honda will cover the cost and you get a brand new tranny that is good for another 100000 miles now the second thing is the timing belt is recomended to be replaced between 90000 and 110000 miles but with only 76000 miles on it you have a ways to go before you have to worry about that I myself have an 02 accord 2dr ex-L 4cyl. and i love it it had 68000 miles on it when i got it and now has 80000 and i have only had it for 11 months but i drive my car alot and i drive it even harder i dont think i have ever shifted to the next gear untill it redlined witch i know is really bad for the car but even with as hard as i drive mine i have never had one problem with it well except for the damage i did the under carraige from having it lowered 2 and a half inch when i bottomed out going 127 on the interstate haha good times but yes you are geeting a good deal and if you get this car you will love it
