It is mostly done in bare feet for grip but sometimes gymnasts wear gym shoes, which is also ok. Any other kind of footwear wouldn't really be safe.

It's easier to grip the floor, balance beam, etc. with bare feet.

Gymnasts do sometimes wear ballet type shoes.I would imagine they do it bare footed because shoes/trainers would weigh them down

Because gymnastics is all about what the human body can do, and it would just look silly if they had shoes on.

Footwear restricts movement and socks are slippy/encourage bullying.
