You will get an ip address with Windows XP right out of the box. This is a new feature with XP known as APIPA - Automatic Private IP Address - and you can find out more about it here:
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/APIPA.html

The IP address range is 169.254.0.1 through 169.254.255.254. The client also configures itself with a default class B subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. A client uses the self-configured IP address until a DHCP server becomes available

There is no default IP address of computers loaded with XP. Reason: The IP address must be unique. Therefore, if everyone used the default IP address, then everyone would have the same address. Could you imagine the US mail system, for example, if there were a default mailing address, and all the mail was sent to ONE address? Whew!

hi sublime,

XP is set with "obtain IP address automatically" meaning it needs a DHCP server to give it an IP address. This would mean there is no default IP address for windows xp..

hope this helped!

By default, Windows XP assumes dynamic IP. If there's no DHCP server, then there's no default IP.
