If I were pregnant and I knew my baby was going to have severe disabilities, be it mentally or physically, and I caught it fairly early in the pregnancy, yes i would abort.

Here is why:
I know myself and I know I dont have it in me to be able to succesfully raise a child with severe disabilities.
Also - a disabled person has so many hardships in life. Why would I want to submit a person to that kind of suffering?

I know Ill get thumbs down but I dont really care. Thats my opinon and it wont change.

I personally wouldn't have an abortion of there were birth defects, I have a friend who has a child who is mentally and physically handicap, they told her she would live till only about 2 years old, shes 12 now. Every child deserves a chance. I think many people would have an abortion because some believe its just not fair to bring a child into this world with so many compications. And its a good reason, I mean nobody wants to have to see their child in the hospital all the time, or have to see it go through pain. Its a personal decision, and nobody should feel bad for this, its different views.

I would not have an abortion,my son was born with a serious heart defect and we did not know until a few minutes after he was born,if I would have known,I still would have gone through with my pregnancy,if I had a pregnancy like my best friend did 8 years ago with a baby that had only 25% of his bones at her ultra sound at 12 weeks and was told there was no way the baby would live, yes I would have an abortion.Hope this helped you a bit. This is of course my opinion and everyone is entitled to their own,my best friend chose not to abort and at 6 months along she went into labour, she had a natural birth and the baby died 1 hour later.

you know, i kinda think this is funny...not so much, but i have an experience. with my last pregnancy, i was tested and found out that i am a carrier for cystic fibrosis. when the drs found out i was they wanted my hubby to be tested too. we couldn't afford to have him tested so we didn't. we feel (even though we are at greater risk because of my recessive gene) that even if we had a child with cystic fibrosis we would love this child just as much as if they were completely heathly. THIS pregnancy, however, when it came time (different dr, by the way) to do my initial blood and lab work. i told the nurse (after she asked about differents screenings that are available) that i didn't need to be tested for cystic fibrosis...i already knew i was a carrier. she asked if my husband had been tested and when i told her no....she was MAD at me...can you believe it??! why do i need to stress out because our risk may be GREATER and then they would INSIST that we get an amnio done to see if ANY child we concieve might have it. the nurse got even MORE angry when i told her we wouldn't do anything even if our child WAS positive for the disease. i couldn't BELIEVE it!! i feel that a life is a life...no matter if it is any different from my own, it is a gift, even if it does mean a shorter time than most. all we can do is make the best of what you have!

this is just all in my humble opinion

Actually the question is would being born be fair to the child. If you have ever seen films of severely autistic children banging their heads against walls and moaning incoherently you have to ask yourself is this child happy to be alive? Will it ever be?

Cystic Fibrosis runs in my family. My brother was born with it and lived for 6 weeks in the hospital before he died. He was hooked up to tubes and wires the entire time. I doubt he enjoyed a moment of it and it destroyed my mother to see it happen. I'm sure an abortion would have upset her, but not as much as carrying him for 9 months and then watching him slowly die for 6 weeks.

These are ethical gray areas that should be left up to those directly involved - the parents. There shouldn't be laws about something so personal and uncertain.

i didn;t see the other question, but I can answer with an opinion. I am adamantly pro choice, all the way. If my child were to be diagnosed in utero with a physical or developmental disability I would NOT abort. Not because I think abortion is wrong for everyone, it is wrong for me. I still support every single womans right to choose what is right for her.

sweetie, it took me 8 years to become pregnant, and i do not belive in abortion, sometimes doctores are wrong! i was told my son would have no legs, but i belive that GOD chose me to be his mother, i was asked if i wanted to have an abortion , and i said no way! my son came 6 weeks early , a bit small , but with legs! and he is now 16 years old and perfect. makes ya wonder just how many times a doctor is wrong? and what if i had the abortion?, anyway just my two cents. good luck and GOD BLESS.

Well I happen to agree with you, but some people believe that having a handicap child is not fair to the rest of their kids or society. They see handicaps as a drain. That the extra time and effort is not worth the reward.

Personally I believe we are all born perfect.

Why anyone would want to abourt a child is beyond me, if you don't want to have a child, then you shouldn't be having sex: much less unprotected sex. However, if you've found yourself in a situation you dont think you can handle, why not consider adoption? -- this way an innocent life wouldn't be at stake.

some one should do some research and find out the first abortion and why it was done and then think about if getting one will change anything for the better or make things worse
