It doesn't make any sense to me at all, to be honest.

Generally, assuming there's nothing high risk or any other causes to do earlier or more frequent ultrasounds, a pretty "major" ultrasound is done at around 20 weeks. That ultrasound, called a "Level II Ultrasound" or, more informally, an "anatomical scan," is more in depth than your quick and dirty ultrasounds (that many women receive at various points during their pregnancy), with the technician or doctor performing the exam checking and measuring the internal organs (i.e. checking that the heart has four chambers, that there are no apparent holes in the kidneys, heart, etc.), the limbs, the head circumference, etc. The cord is checked, including the flow through it. The placenta is observed. Certain "soft signs" that can be related to genetic abnormalities are checked for -- for example, the appearance of a nasal bridge. Cardiac activity is monitored (has your doctor ever even listened to and measured cardiac activity using a doppler in her/his office?) and amniotic fluid is also measured to ensure that there's neither too much nor too little.

I would ask your doctor about an ultrasound, and about why one has not been performed. My pregnancy was high risk and so I had more ultrasounds than I can count, but I don't know anyone who didn't have AT LEAST the Level II ultrasound to check on such things.

What happens at your OB visits and how often do you have them?

Yea I would say it's abnormal for your doctor not to give you one. It also depends on what state you live in. During the beginning of my pregnancy I lived in Seattle,WA and I received a sonogram at 12 weeks. Now I live in Maryland and they usually don't do the first sonogram until 20 weeks, but you should have already had a regular sonogram and if you want a sex ultrasound. Good luck and congratulations.

25 weeks is late. Im 7 weeks and I had one already (but only because of a certain issue) but my Dr said at 18 weeks they always do a sonogram. Ask your Dr or even request one to make sure everything is going well with the baby. Good luck

if you are referring to a sonogram where they hear the baby's heart, usually the doctors do that every time you go there to your monthly appointment, now if you mean and Ultrasound where they check the baby and you can see him, then that depends, they use that to check the baby's measures, and position and how is his development, and some cases you could know the sex about 24 to 30 weeks, don't worry if he hasn't ask you for one, is probably that he hasn't noted anything out of normal and is just waiting for the right time. Good Luck!

my doctor with my first child was reluctant to give me a sonogram. (he wasn't sure if my insurance would cover it) but even HE ordered one at 20 weeks. the doctor I'm seeing now with my second pregnancy ordered one at 9 weeks for "dating", then another at 12 weeks for down syndrome screening, one at 20 weeks for gender and checking that everything looks good, and one more closer to my due date to make sure the baby is head down. for a grand total of 4! so, according to my doctor, you should have already had 3 by now. i would ask your doctor about it.... maybe they're just waiting for you to request one? doesn't hurt to ask!

I am 26 weeks and I've had 4 ultrasounds. The first one was at 6 weeks to determine how far along I am, the second one at 12 weeks to get a picture, the third one at 16 weeks to try to determine the sex, and the fourth one at 22 weeks to check for disabilities, measure bones/amniotic fluid, etc.

Ask your doctor why he hasn't performed one. Do you have insurance? Are you shooting for a natural birth (maybe he assumed you wanted the whole process natural)?

Even if you only have one scan, it would usually be done at around 20 weeks as that is the time for the main anomoly scan. I had a scan at 20 weeks, and that was my last scan - I was told I wouldn't need any more!
I'm very surprised that your doctor did not send you for a scan at this time, or at least discuss it with you.
Having lots of ultrasounds isn't necessary unless it is a complicated pregnancy, but at least one at 20 weeks is normal.

Most people I know have one by 20 weeks, ask your doctor, I had two, one at 18 weeks and one at 26 weeks.

I am a mom to five healthy children. As I have noticed some doctors like to wait to see a more developed baby. Especially if you have no troubles in your pregnancy. You will have an easier time to see (if you want) the boy or girl that is in there ! Do not worry. Relax and enjoy the little life you have with you. Best wishes :)

No. Some doctors don't feel the need to have them. You may have one soon to check the heart. Sometimes when they send you earlier, it's to check the due date and size of the baby. Ask your doctor at your next visit.
