I was just wondering what the basic steps that most current politicians followed to put them in their seat of power?

Having pull and knowing the right people always helps, no matter the nature of the work. If you wish to succeed in high-level politics don't underestimate the value of an education. You can study political science in university. A good many politicians have law degrees, but it's certainly not necessary. Many of them either have been, or, are, successful businessmen and women, or CEO's. You'll need a good foundation of knowledge of the workings of the political system and you'll best get this by studying political science at university. I have a degree in political science, and you'll be amazed at how much you'll benefit from the study that will help you in politics, and managing campaigns and elections.

Learning how to lie with a straight face. Anyone can lie, but the ability to do so without letting on that you're lying is an important trait of any politician.

Start with a four year degree in political science
Add a dash of internship
Bake for 2 years
and taadaa! Politician!

either have the money to not have to work, have a job that allows you to leave for 3-4 months a year in the winter/spring or be retired... then file your intent to run and start campaigning.. make sure to keep your campaign money separate from your income though .. don't want to end up in jail :)
