You've got that right!
I agree 100%.
Language is a tool to be used for communication.
With communication comes understanding.
With understanding comes freindship.
With friendship comes peace!
At least I'd like to believe so.

Learning a foreign language is a great thing. But learning a language and learning about another culture are mutually independent of each other. It is entirely possible to learn a language and not about that countries culture, and visa versa. So, it sounds like you would be taking a language course at school, because they teach both at the same time.
But a second language is a great thing.
Good luck.

Learning an language other than English is beneficial for any child's development / education..
* Culturally - don't think I need to say anything here
* Cognitive - respected sources say learning a second language exercises neural activity on both sides of the brain... Improves mathematical skills.
However, once it becomes more than 2 languages, then possible problems can arise, such as the child not being equally good at all languages or perhaps just 'so so' at all languages... Then again, it does all depends on upbringing...
Our family friends have a child who had a mental and physical disability that was to slowly deteriorate from birth... They had the option to put him in a home or keep him at home.. Being the strong minded parents that they are, chose to keep him at home and try to get him to the level of a 'normal' child..
Reseach and medical opinions included using a 2nd language to promote neural exercise.. (In his case, they chose Japanese)..
THIS CHILD IS NOW PERFORMING AT NORMAL, IF NOT ABOVE AVERAGE STANDARDS THANKS TO LEARNING A 2ND LANGUAGE!!!
So yes, I STRONGLY believe learning English plus another language is beneficial to any child's development...

learning a second (or third or fourth....) language is never wasted time, the study of a foreign language lets you learn so much more about your own language. Sadly, in America at least its generally looked down upon as wasted time. in other countries, almost everyone at least knows some of the language of their neighboring countries.

Learning a non-native language should always remain an option for people who wish to pursue it. But let's be honest -- there are kids in the United States who can't even wrap their brains around proper English. Stupidity is a disease, but the problem isn't solved by immersing people in boring culture lessons via languages they care nothing about. English first (or whatever is the native language of one's country/region), everything else for those who want it, but foreign languages should never be required. The only exception is for kids who do not speak the local/regional language and need it for academic reasons. Then they need to learn the language of their area, as it is not everyone else's responsibility to conform to immigrants' languages.

Yes.... I do think that kids should be learn new languages. I also think that this should be done in the early years, younger children learn faster. I think that doing this in high school makes it harder on the kids.
Just one opinion....good luck
knowledge is power!
