Because it's a good bet. And screening their calls and being able to cut off any meaningful questioning or dissent helps.

Some listeners are. That is how those guys stay on the air. If people wrote the station and protested or simply did not tune in they would dry up and go away. Radio stations rely on ratings to sell advertisement. Advertisements are their income. No listeners and no one wants to buy an ad that no one hears.
If enough people complain about the content; any responsible station will either admonish the announcers or take their show off the air.

In the case of Fox news, their listeners ARE too stupid to question anything the talking heads say. It would be a safe bet.

Its all part of the medias attempt to control what we see hear and believe .
None of it is based in fact and all of it designed to promote the growth of the military and corporations .
We have three basic needs and those are food shelter and clothing .
For conservatives that have plenty of food shelter and clothing its is imperative to defend its hoarding of these basic needs .
It does this by military spending and higher local taxes to support a police state .
This is paid for by the working class of people who make less then $50,000. a year .
We spend billions of dollars on entertainment and the associated products , which is over a trillion dollars of our economy .Movies ,print , cable ,dvds and cds , computers and associated hardware comprise a large segment of our economy . Americans are in debt to their eyeballs and some drowning in it . Mass media outlets collect billions in advertising that directly increases the per unit cost of everything we buy . Nothing is for free . And nothing is as it appears .

I agree with Alex Phd ...
stupid people are sitting around watching Oprah, Springer, Judge Joe Brown or listening to pop music on their ipod.
Talk show hosts want all people to listen -- even those that disagree with them -- to keep their numbers up. I guess you don't know much about arbitron ratings or anything like that. It's all about the ratings and the markets.

I wish you would give some examples, but I'm willing to bet that by and large, most talk show hosts exercise control over who their guests are, so you can be sure that they'll choose the ones who make them look good somehow.

They don't. Stupid people don't listen to political talk radio. Stupid people watch E! and Oprah and anything dealing with celebrities. Informed people pay attention to politics. Stupid people are apathetic.

They're designed that way.
They appeal to the lowest common denominator.
Just listen to Limbaugh, or O'Reilly or Savage and you'll see.
None of those guys could stand up to any kind of intelligent debate.
