It might be a reasonable system in a year but you are experiencing one of three areas of problems which I would watch out for.

First, both hardware manufacturers and software programmers have not had enough time to make their drivers and programs compatible with Vista. Most will do this eventually but some older hardware and software may stay orphaned.

Second, Vista was rushed out to meet a deadline. Microsoft does not have a good track record with the first release of their products. Make sure you apply all the patches as they are released. I suspect you will see a lot of them.

Third, Vista is a resource hog. XP runs noticeably faster on a similarly equiped machine. Aero (the Vista interface) sucks up graphics and processor power like nobody's business.

All in all, if you were asking before you bought the laptop, I would have advised getting one with XP.

As with any OS upgrade, this is a problem you will run into. When XP first came out the same complaints were all over the place. If the programs will simply not load, you will have no choice but to buy new versions for Vista, if they are available.

I had this problem when I first upgraded to XP. I bought a CD burner that came with Roxio 4 months earlier. When I installed Roxio on the XP machine it loaded fine, but I started having a lot of shut down problems. I traced it to the version of Roxio I was running. All the other software and drivers I was using had free upgrades I could download to make them compatible, but Roxio required that I buy the new version and I couldn't just upgrade. I also had a portable printer that had no upgrades and would not run on XP.

This is the reason it is important for you to run Windows Upgrade Adviser before you make the move to a new OS. It will let you know beforehand what hardware and software you are running that will and will not work. Then you have no, or fewer surprises. Unfortunately you are past that point and your only option will be to buy new software for anything you can't load and simply upgrade.

I like it, had no problems running any of my programs so far, although I heard the 64 bit version is a lot less compatible.
It looks nicer, its a lot easier to do common tasks and find what you want and has many useful new features.

However it uses a huge ammount of memory compared to xp, therefore I am having great difficulty running the latest games at the same graphical details as I can on xp.

I do believe an additional 1gb of ram would solve my problems, but thats going to cost me about £35 and will have to wait for now.

My only other problem is that there is no http email support for accounts like hotmail, I have to manually log into each of my hotmail accounts to check my mail, whereas before outlook express handled this for me.

You obviously didn't read any Vista reviews or critiques before you jumped into it. All the reviews tell you most software will not be compatible with Vista. Software makers are always slow to catch up. Same with drivers. Sorry
