The best way to check an alternator without a voltmeter, or if you can't drive it to Autozone is to jump start the vehicle, and while it's running, pull the positive battery cable off the battery. If the alt is good the car will keep running. If it's not charging the car will stall right away.

First check the belt to see if it broke or came off. You can check your alternator to see if it's working by taking a screwdriver or hacksaw blade, and with engine running hold it over the middle section of the alternator case . Hold it about 1/2 inch from case, if it is drawn to the case like a magnet it is working.

put a volt meter across the battery while car is running and if it reads around 13 volts, then it should be ok.
