Well this is from Hurricane Katrina but I am from NC, involved with EARS (emergency animal rescue service) myself and a few others went to FL and LA to help with the animal shelters for those who couldn't take their animals with them... we reunited many dogs, cats, a ferret and a few birds with their owners that hadn't seen them in a month or a couple of weeks... The expressions on the owners faces were priceless when they found out that their animals were ok and safe... so many tears of joy.... Also I got to take 4 little chiuahuas home with me until the owner got back on her feet.. I was glad to help.... and would do it again!!!!

I went to an animal shelter to adopt a puppy. There was one puppy that was very sick, and they were concerned that she would not make it. They had her listed as a "Terrier Mix". They were also concerned that she may make the other puppies in the shelter sick. She was too sick for them to even give her the immunizations that she needed. She was not ready to be adopted, but they said that she needed individual attention to make it.
I adopted her, and took her home with prescription medicines that they gave me. For 2 days she would not even eat. I tried everything to tempt her to eat, but she refused. She was just such a good puppy, and she kept taking her medicines very well. She was also always very good with her paper training, like she understood what I wanted of her.
On the third day she started eating, and she is now 3 1/2 years old. And it turns out that the "Terrier Mix" is a pure-bred Manchester Terrier. She doesn't look anything like she did when she was a tiny puppy. She is the best, smartest, coolest dog that I have ever had!
When she was 6 months old I took her back to the shelter to show them how well she was doing, and they remembered her. Everyone was amazed at how healthy and happy she was, and what a good looking dog she was turning into. None of them had much hope that she would make it. I sure am glad she did!

We live in the country by a large river. While on a walk, we heard a cry like an eagle. Rushed to the river bank and there was an immature eagle standing on the sand, obviously with a broken wing.
Time was ticking as this river is close to the ocean and the tide was comming in, the eagle would have drowned.
My husband stayed with the eagle and I hot footed it to call the wild life rescue people. They arrived within 15 minutes!
Before the rescurer put the eagle in the cage, she let us stand beside the eagle and have a very close up look for about 5 minutes. Eagle was nursed by the OWL organization here in BC and sucessfully released.
What a fantastic feeling!
PS Thank you for asking this question, good memories here!

1. I heard a kitty crying outside my home for hours. I looked for it and realized it was inside the motor area of a car. I saw a letter left in the car, with the owner's name, and found his phone in the book and called him to come and open the cover of the car. I took out a kitten that was so scared, dirty and sick, you couldn't tell what colour it was. I took him upstairs and we cleaned him, he went through treatment for funghi (his entire skin was covered in them), he had treatment for his stomach because he had diarrhea so much that he stunk even through his skin, well, now he is a huge cat 3 years old lying on my pillow!
2. I saw a dog abandoned on the motorway. He was a collie mix, he was so dirty his hair were stuck together, he looked awful. He was so skinny, too. I took him in my car, and he was so happy that we almost had a car accident because he was sitting on my lap and kissing me, while i was driving. I took him to the dog salon, where he became gorgeous, the vet, where he was treated for ehrlichia that he had, vaccinated, etc, then he was trained, and now he got adopted by a family with a nice garden! I visit him often and he is happy and gorgeous!
3. My cat had feline urinary tract disease, 2 years ago. The vet who was treating him made a horrible mistake, she destroyed his urethra, he was operated on, and for a long time he had a big problem, blocking and not being able to pee more and more often. Everyone said to put him down, but he and I didn't give up. We found a great vet, specialised in this sort of surgery, all other vets I asked said he was the only one in Greece who could save the cat. He did the surgery again, the cat had a catheter on for 3 weeks, I didn't sleep any night all the 3 weeks, I had him in my arms all the time comforting him and preventing him from damaging the catheter, he was dripping all over, but after that he got well and he is completely healthy now .

Sure..
a couple of years ago, a yellow lab mix was thrown out of a car in front of my house. I coaxed the dog into the yard..which took 3 days to do!...and nursed her back to health. She is still with me today.
Also, a German Shepherd wandered into the area and was feeding on the local chickens & etc. I grabbed her and slapped a collar around her neck as my neighbors were turning the corner.
I did find her owner and they were reunited.
There ya go...2 for 1.

a little stray pomeranian who was wandering around the apartment we were staying in, had no hair on her butt and tail and was skinny, kept hanging out looking up at our apartment every day. I went down and got her, brought her in, she was a lethargic, underweight sad little dog, dirty with fleas, I took her to the vet, they said she was about 7 years old, she had a collar but no tags, the vet said she had been living oudside in the elements for over a year to get like this. she had a flea allergy, had to be bathed every day in medicated shampoo, and take medication,I did what vets said, at the end of my job,( I was working in another state) I drove to another state to visit my mom, with the little dog, Maggie and her fur had started to look better, her attitude improved, she was eating better, the minute she saw my mom, she must have recognized something familiar in my mom, she started dancing on two legs and in circles. the two fell in love instantly. They are living together happily today and that was 5 years ago. She has a big fluffy white tail and hair on her butt again. She is a happy princess now.

I know there is a lot of horrible things being discussed now a days.
A great story of a rescue.
I received an email from an animal control ifacility n Southern California stating they had a horse on their facility that needed to go to a rescue because they couldn't find a home for it. It was an ex-racehorse. Animal Control had picked him up off the streets after he had been abandoned and took him to their facilities. He had apparently been out on the streets for quite some time fending for himself. When I got him, he was trying to chase off dog sized animals (including my minature horses). I wasn't able to leave him alone that day because the minature horses were curious about him and he was viciously trying to ward them off and I had to call him on it several times. My volunteer horse walker had been standing between a minature horse and the rescued horse and the rescued horse reached down and grabbed her thigh and started to pick her up to toss her aside. He dropped her when she let out a loud scream.
The next day, he was showing signs of making friends with the minature horses and he was quite eager to take a walk. I walked him in an area where he would not be bothered by dogs or children. I did not want any injuries. He couldn't be a happier horse as I walked him in the protected area. He reached down periodically and grabbed a mouth full of green grass. Later, my horse walker came by and walked the horses. She wanted to walk him, but didn't want to do it alone and so we walked him back to the protected area, where she took full control of him. They both walked and walked and walked. It was quite obvious they both were having a fabulous time. She had totally lost all the fear she had felt when he first arrived. She is now anxiously awaiting him to put on some more weight and to heal a little more. She is excited over the prospects of being able to ride him one day.
Every single day, I have had this horse, he has been taking giant leaps of improvement. He is finding out that instead of being in a life of cruelty and torture, he is in a life of happiness and love. He is finding out he has a lot of friends, both in animals and people.
And the story continues....

we found this kitten that was only a few days old and had been abandoned in a bush by our fire hall. she had the loudest cry that i had ever heard so it wasn't hard to find her. she had three broken ribs and fit in the palm of your hand. the vet said that she wouldn't be able to make it through the night but there was no way that we were going to give up on her. we stayed up all night rubbing her little body and feeding her baby formula. well she made it through the night and she turned out to be the friendliest cat that i have ever owned.

7 years ago this september i was coming home from school and saw a cat dart out from under a car n thought nothing of it, then something gray, then another cat. i don't kno why, but i chased them. then i saw the gray blob was a rabbit! clearly not wild as it was a lop-eared. anyway, i turned out my school bag, and went after this rabbit, assuming it was someones lost pet. i caught her and took her home (leaving my school work in the street...shame...). we took pictures of her and posted them up everywhere in the estate i live in. about a day later a man knocked on the door and said it was his rabbit, i was just about to get her when he said he'd let her go because she was a deformed pedegree and therefore would win him no money at compertitions. he let her go cuz he thought she'd die and as someone had taken her in he was going to have to do the job him self with a hammer to her head. i slammed the door in the morons face and y'kno wot? right now i hav a lovely soppy (fat) gray rabbit on my lap! how culd i let him do that? plus, if i say 'gimme a kiss' she'l lick me hand or face and awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww so cute

3 years ago a baby bird fell out of a tree and hit my windshield. i stopped and picked it up. I took it home to my girlfriend at the time and we tried to feed it. Now this is a BABY bird and couldnt eat solid food. My Gf and i went to the bait shop and bought worms, we mashed them up and put them into a dropper. The bid would not eat it. We wracked our brains and i finnally made a beak with my hands and the bird opened up. the bird grew and grew and we found out it was a yellow tailed finch. We let the bird go that summer and every year it comes back to my house and lands on my shoulder everyday and i feed it.
The birds name is squeak
