Yep, you might as well say "yo mama is so old, her social security number is 2". or any other various yo mama jokes, just as insulting when taken literally. You know what I'm sayin, you son of a wonderful woman?

Technically, sure, it's an insult to the mother. But we don't stop and think about that -- just like we don't stop to think about some of the other swear words/phrases that are used. I mean, look at the phrase: "go fk yourself" .....don't you think that, if man/woman could that that, we'd do precious little else (at least until the novelty wore off)? There's hardly anything insulting about the words, but it's how we use them, nonetheless. (And I've always thought "fk me" make far more sense than "fk you," for the purposes we use it for. No?)

well kinda you are not only insulting thier mother but also insulting them as well in essence you are calling them both dogs. so when you get down to it is it really that bad of an insult at all?

yes, but in many cultures an insult of one's mother is more offensive than an insult of oneself

Technically, yes. I think the phrase is so overused that most people dont even think of it like that anymore though.
