present your side, respect their difference in beliefs and keep an open mind.. if it causes fights then you have to either agree to disagree or get a new friend.. but there's nothing wrong with keeping company that doesn't agree with you.. it strengthens you actually.. I'm a Democrat and one of my best friends as well as a few of the girls I'm dating are Republicans (and one Libertarian).. it's fun actually :P

Say that Marxist communism failed with the installation of dictators like Mao and Stalin. Also mention that communism since then as evolved into a modern concept and is much more prepared to deal with the hypocrisy of capitalism

Use the examples of Cuba, Soviet Union, and how capitalism is the only way a country prevails. Also, if he is a communist why doesn't he move to Cuba instead of being here?

If he is truly your friend you will not "react" or "convince" him of anything. You will simply accept the fact that your friend is a communist. Then you can decide whether or not you want to continue the friendship.

Try using historical references, such as Mao Zedong, and Joseph Stalin.

Say to him that Karl Marx meant well, and he had a lot of good ideas, but Communism as he envisioned it runs counter to human nature and can not be done.

The result always was and always will be more Stalins, Mao Zedong's, and Kim Jong Il's

Tell him about the immense amount of people who suffer at the hands of communism.

Although he's free to believe in what he wants.

What your friend thinks is his own business and not yours. I'm not a Communist, but what he thinks is really nothing to you.
