As an out gay man, I thought the commercial was hilarious and done with tongue in cheek humour. What I find funny is that you have some gays going ballistic about it being hateful and you have straights freaking out because it somehow promotes gays. If you go to some of the message boards, you get gays saying they won't buy snickers because they're homophobes and in the same board you homophobes saying they won't buy snickers because they support gays. Talk about a no win situation.
That said, consider that snickers is now, for the moment, the most talked about candy.........so did the ad really fail?

Do you think the commercial would have even aired during the Superbowl if the two manly men had enjoyed the snickers kiss. I think not.
I know that it was meant to be funny but it did give the impression that two men kissing is unmanly.
I've laughed at other material when straight men found themselves in awkward situations like this but that commercial was just a dumb commercial, he should've ask for a piece in the first place and they wouldn't have end up in that situation. I guess snickers is that irresistible.

I wasn't offended by the commercial -- I was offended by the alternate endings that they offered on-line (and pulled 12 hours after the commercial aired) for a vote -- the winner to be used nationally in an ad campaign; one of which showed a group of professional athletes heaping abuse on the two men for kissing. To me, its meaningless -- but I'm an adult, to a 13 year old boi, watching the commercial with his straight friends, knowing inside that he is gay -- it would have been (and may have been for those gay bois who saw it online) not just depressing and disheartening, but destructive, possibly even leading to suicide. What sort of pressure do you think teenage gay boys already are under? What sort of self-hatred do you think they already may harbor? What effect do you think THAT commercial ending, not the one they actually showed, might have on the most ego-fragile of them?
The commercial was funny, and frankly made it look undesirable to be straight -- but the alternates, out there for all to see -- you are an intelligent man, you tell me how many suicides among sports minded gay kids there might have been if that had been the focus of a national advertising campaign. Tell me how you can be sure that there weren't suicides due to the web version -- we all know teens find more on-line than we do.
I'm sorry, I don't care about being on the front page at all, and the ad as broadcast seemed harmless to me -- but I think Mars candy was way out-of-line for producing the alternative endings and making them available, and if one of my boys was gay and affected by that commercial, I would have sued.

PS Sadly, Jan above clearly demonstrates exactly why it is an issue for many people -- in and of itself. Can you imagine saying that if the advertisement had shown African Americans, or perhaps Jewish Americans, or Arab Americans? What do you think the reaction to the commercial would have been had it, for that matter, been some other minority? Thank you Jan for so clearly demonstrating why we should all, gay or straight (most of my friends who have gotten involved in this are straight males, btw) be concerned about the trivialization of prejudice.

I thought the commercial was funny, but the stuff on the Snickers website (a violent alternate ending, nasty comments from football players) was not.
And apparently, the book publishing company thought it was a big enough deal to give him a contract. When a gay or bi football player can hold his boyfriend's hand or propose to his boyfriend after winning the Super Bowl, you won't be seeing books like that anymore.

The commercial was homophobic, imagine the public outcry, if it had been a white guy and black female, and they had that same grossed out reaction, then posted it on a website with player say "that sick", or "They're disgusting". The commercial should not have been made, it's time to stop homosexuality from being a joke. Especially when young straight guys drive into our neigborhood to cause us harm

It's getting attention because it's controversial.
The Snickers ad that was shown was not the issue. It was one of the "alternate endings" on the web page that showed the guys attacking each other (one using a wrench). It seems to make light of gay-bashing.

What???? You think there is too much on the radar these days that puts gays on the front page? Are you kidding me??
Nobody wants to even know what they do in the privacy of their homes and bedrooms.
It's THEM - THEY want to march in the streets; its them who want to go public and profess to being gay. I don't broadcast what my husband and I do in our bedroom. If they are offended , its their own damn fault - they are the ones who are asking for it. Nobody wants to know what nasty things they want to do. Nobody.
And, as far as that commercial goes - they can get offended all they want, but if two straight normal men are in that (funny) situation, and then feel awkward about it, and need to do something "manly" then that too is their right to feel that way, unless what you think is that regular normal men should start to act gay.
Forget it. God help us, this world needs some correction, and boy, is it ever gonna get some...
