Your question is extremely important to the field of psychology.
An individual's personality, behavior and psychology are manifested by brain function. But decades ago, very little was known about what the different subcomponents of the brain were for, what they did, or how they affected a person's psychological condition.
One way is to carefully observe patients who have had specific brain injuries. When they act in strange ways, the bizarre behavior can be linked to a part of the brain in the area of the injury. This science was called neuropsychology.
Another way is to do selective probing and testing when brain surgery is required. Much has been learned this way.
It has never been feasible to open the brain strictly to do research on it. Such an approach would probably do damage or kill the subject.
But during the past two or three decades, various kinds of non-invasive brain scans have been developed and continue to advance. They allow scientists to correlate thought processes and behavior with brain activity real-time. Examples are PET and MRI.
This has dramatically advanced the understanding of "what's going on up there." And this understanding has been hugely useful to psychologists, because they want those answers, too. Today, the prevailing paradigm for psychogists is called cognitive psychology, or cognitive neuropsychology, which was made possible by the advanced brain scan technologies you refer to. We now know a lot more about how the brain creates emotion, learning, behavior, memory and other key issues related to psychology, both clinical and research.
I hope this helps!

Psychological science is partly based on physiological facts to explain why people do what they do i.e. The Brain
Historically in psychology behaviour could be explained by functioning in generalised parts of the brain i.e. the Precentral gyrus is known to be resposible for primary motor skills (see link)
Advanced brain scans give more specific locations of the the functions of the brain i.e. the advanced scan can determine not only the difference between lifting your leg to kicking something but capture the differences in thoughts before you raise your leg
This technology will greatly enhance the ongoing welfare of mankind for some time to come

Findings that specific areas of the brain light up, deteriorate and decay, or change in response to certain things have allowed psychologists to test medications and directly see their effects, predict certain diseases, and even discover how and why we feel what we do and how that affects us.
For example, we have been able to see that in certain types of criminals, let's say those who engage in cannibalism, have a certain area of the brain that lights up that is not evident in people who do not have the compulsion to eat human flesh. So now we can test different medications to see if we can unlight that part of the brain and in effect, cure that person of cannibalism.

it shows that certain peoples brains are wired differently and are more stimulated from different reactions than others. That all actions are just not a choice, but rather some brains will tend to have more of a tendency towards an action than others.
