How many days are you born? How long does it take to die? When were you last really sick? And you're as old as you feel! Seems to me like you're worrying about a few days out of a life of decades! Stop sweating the small stuff and enjoy the gaps between and you'll find you're pretty happy!

How? I find life is full of things that make me happy. A hot shower, a sunny day, the smile of a friend, a meal with my family. All sources of joy and happiness! And none short sighted or based on denial as far as I can see.

Since the phrasing of your question suggests you have been reading about buddhism, why not start there? I personally liked the following:

That's a big question. Sickness is not inevitable but of course the others are. For me death is not something to fear. I am not a Christian or a follower of any other religion. As Einstein pointed out however it is not possible to destroy energy. Given that we are only energy we cannot be destroyed only transformed. Real happiness comes from within and is not dependant on external circumstances. Happiness which is dependant on external circumstances, events etc is not real. Life is great because it is finite in this form. If it were to go on forever and ever we would not appreciate it so much. I think you might find it useful to explore some Buddhist teachings.

Just look at a live sunset. To experience watching a sunset is one example of experiencing happiness. When you enjoy such a natural experience like a sunset, there's no short sightedness or denial here. Just a precious moment in a sentient beings life that is a natural essence of pure bliss!

Birth and death are at opposite ends of all human lives, we simply have to make the most of the bit in between, the life we get. Yes life is sometimes a real b*tch, you get ill etc, etc, but there are good bits too, we will enjoy life more, if we treasure the good bits and can find pleasure in simple things. Make time to live, seek out some of the things that are enjoyable but simple. Life doesn't last forever, but it can be fun while it's here.

The Bhagavad Gita is a great inspiration for all aspects of Life. On the surface it appears like a discourse preparing a leader for a great war but it is referred to as the Jewel in the Crown of the Mahabharata and like a jewel it reveals amazing insights and aspects the more it is studied. It is widely regarded that the battle that is about to take place faces all souls and that the advice given by Sri Krishna is how each of us should strive to deal with life.

The question is, what is "real" happiness? I have found that must PPL go through life not unhappy and not ecstatic either, just somewhere inbetween. Presumably you want to spend the rest of your life in an ecstatic state of bliss? Grow up, there is nothing like that in this life. You are spiritually spoilt and should consider other people and what they have to struggle with, not some idiotic quest for "enlightenment"

I think that you've obviously been looking at Buddhism so you should know that, in Buddhist thought, pleasure is transitory. All things are transitory.
Simply watch the mind. When happiness arises, let it arise. When it passes away, let it pass away.
Don't concern yourself with permanence but be aware in this moment of this moment.
Having said all that - I'm a very happy man. Buddhism sounds a bit nihilistic, but in practice it is abolutely the reverse.

Happiness comes to me in knowing that i being mortal am also immortal as long as others remember me. My religion also talks of many reincarnations but to respect the atheists that are here i will not go into that. Also i may die but i have a child who carries a part of me and his children will too.
