The best-known version was written by the French author Charles Perrault in 1697,
The original Chinese version of the story first appeared in a 9th Century book.
The Grimm Brothers included it in a book called Children's and Household Tales around 1807.

It is an old, old story that crosses many cultures! In chine, their "cinderella" was famous for her tiny feet :)

Cinderella is probably the oldest and most common fairy tale around. There are hundreds (literally) of variations from around the world. The oldest known is from China. The version most Americans and Western Europeans are familiar with came to us from the Grimm brothers in the early 1800's.
