I'm not an expert and can't answer the question per say, but here is my response:

What movies are playing in your theaters right now? If Yahoo's UK movies page is any indication, you borrow some of our stuff too. How bout your radio? Do you all by any chance listen to Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and Pink?

What's the matter with being global? I like that we share.

PS: The last question that I read where a Brit was insulting the US was about grammar. Did you not learn about ending sentences in prepositions?

Because most of those shows are made by Production companies who retain the rights to the programme concept and then sell those rights to various networks around the world to be re-made for their own local market. For example, Endemol is a Dutch company that produced the format for Big Brother, Deal or No Deal and Who Wants To Be a Millionaire and then sold the idea all over the world for big mullah. As for shows like the Office, Vicar of Dibley (going to be remade with Kirstey Alley) and Life on Mars (currently in production); Americans have to have them remade because a) they don't get our humour, b) they don't understand our accents and c) the big networks believe that the general public wouldn't want to watch our shows because they are set in another part of the world outside the US and don't feature anything remotely American in them!

The BBC love to make money out of the Americans. Also, BB is form the Netherlands and Deal or No Deal was like an international phenomenon before Channel 4 caught on.

There are a lot of Brits working in America who want to send money back home. Banking laws and taxes make this difficult, but you can use showbiz as a cover for it.

It's also a kind of international welfare. Because the British don't really produce enough through industry, some Americans (and other nationalities) feel sorry and buy second rate British garbage to keep y'all employed.

The question is, why don't we copy any of the good shows? Where's the American for Mr Bean (oh wait, that's Laurel and Hardy), One Foot In The Grave (oh wait that's us as well...)? And why do all talented Brits come to America?

Getting their own back? We've probably pinched plenty of theirs. Besides, weren't some of those theirs first? I thought Wife Swap was an American one, and Super Nanny. What's more American broadcasting companies (and British when we do it) don't copy, they pay enormous amounts of money for the rights to use the idea, the more they buy the better for British companies!

We British continue to set high broadcasting standards worldwide through the BBC network, and via some commercial channels. However, many of us still enjoy the fantasy releases like Startrek, Stargate and CSI, all made in the USA.

Some of it is to help make us UK guys some money, either to the BBC etc - helps keep license fee lower - or just to companies located here.

Beware, just because a TV show is on our screens, doesn't mean that we created it first either. We may have just bought the rights to show it, from some other place or company.

Well, to be fair, they only copy the really good ones. But you forgot about What Not To Wear and Trading Places. We Yanks thank heavens for the beeb. Gives us some decent programs to watch.

You could ask "why do British TV production companies sell all of their concepts overseas?" and mean the same thing.

PS - not one of the programmes you have listed is anything we in Britain should be remotely proud of.

PPS - While we're at it, Channel 4 copied Big Brother from the Netherlands.

They don't copy them, we sell the programmes due to low revenue off advertisements, we also purchase a lot for the same reason, its cheaper than producing them ourselves.
