Sputnik. Soviet satellite that did nothing but beep, but could be used to guide a missile.
Radio frequency was one that radioameteurs could listen so it was more of a message to Us that "we are now in lead of the spacerace, be afraid".

The moon was earths first satellite that we were aware of. It was obvioulsy very visible, but early man did not understand it's motion, but they knew it was repettive.
Moons of other planets were discovered before a man made satellite was built.

Space Firsts:
The history of our exploration of space goes back to October 4th 1957, when the USSR launched the first ever man-made object into space, the satellite Sputnik.
The USSR went on to launch the first dog into space (Laika in Sputnik II).
The first man into space (Yuri Gargarin).
The first woman (Valentina Tereshkova).
The space race would ultimately end with the US landing of Apollo 11 on the Moon in June 1969.
