Hi x.x thanks for the 10 points and sorry for those 2 idiots who answered your last question.

By the way as you read these articles be careful because I noticed they had different Death tolls. Some were written early during the day or at night or next day so the numbers keep going up and down.

MONTROC-LE-PLANET, France (CNN) -- Ten people were reported dead and two missing Wednesday after a huge avalanche swept through two villages in the Mont Blanc region of France, demolishing chalets and dumping the wreckage hundreds of meters (yards) away.

Meanwhile, heavy snow fell relentlessly in other parts of Europe, forcing evacuations and stranding thousands in Switzerland, Austria and Germany.

Peter Borgaard, owner of the Hotel les Bec Rouges in Montroc, France, told CNN that among the 10 bodies recovered by rescuers after Tuesday's avalanche was that of a 4-year-old girl.

Rescuers dug out 20 people in the hamlets of Le Tour and Montroc near the popular ski resort of Chamonix, a spokesman at the local government office said. He said the dead included three men, three women and four children.

Seventeen people were injured; several of them were in a state of shock, officials said Wednesday.

Residents said some of the chalets were literally blown away by the blast of snow tearing down the slopes at more than 100 kilometers per hour (60 mph).

Rescue crews -- some using sophisticated electronic sensors and others with trained avalanche dogs -- worked through the night Tuesday and continued searching on Wednesday for others who may be trapped under the snow.

French President Jacques Chirac said he felt "infinite sadness" upon learning of the disaster.

Largest avalanche in nearly a century

The 200-meter-wide (660 feet) avalanche, which hit shortly after 2:30 p.m. (8:30 a.m. EST) was the largest to strike the Mont Blanc region since 1908, a local government official said.

Borgaard said he saw a giant wall of snow descend on the village of Montroc.

The force of the avalanche in Montroc loosened boulders and ripped out trees. Many workers inside the hotel were injured after the avalanche slammed into the building.

"My biggest fear is now that my friends are trapped under the snow, yet people are pulling together to evacuate the victims," Borgaard said.

About 20 people, including eight children, were pulled alive from the snow shortly after the avalanche, according to the police department in the Haute Savoie region. One young man spent hours beneath the snow before he was rescued around midnight.

"We think there could be others inside the chalets or near the chalets who could be buried," said Michel Berg of the Haute Savoie police.

The valley around the two villages has long been a popular destination for skiers. The avalanche coincided with the first week of winter vacation for French schoolchildren.

Austria
Authorities in neighboring Switzerland and Austria posted avalanche warnings Tuesday and evacuated villages most at risk.

In Austria, helicopter pilots braved barely visible conditions to deliver food and emergency medical supplies to cut off areas.

About 6,000 tourists were snowed in at Austria's popular resorts of St. Anton, Lech, Zuers and Ischgl. More than 40 centimeters (16 inches) of snow fell overnight in the region, on top of 1.7 meters (5.6 feet) from the weekend. More snow was forecast for the rest of the week.

Another 3,000 tourists have been stranded in the resort town of Tirol, near the Swiss border, for four straight days.

To keeps the restless guests busy, bars and clubs stayed open around-the-clock and organizers put together a special nighttime ski race. Skiing was banned elsewhere amid fears of avalanches.

Switzerland
"I adore snow," said Lisette Kapp, a 73-year-old Swiss tourist on vacation in the southwestern Swiss resort of Davos. "It's been coming down day and night, night and day. I haven't seen anything like it in the 15 years I've been coming down here."

A cafe owner and his wife were killed in the central Swiss resort town of Wengen on Sunday after an avalanche completely swept away the top floor of their establishment. Local authorities evacuated 15 nearby homes the next day.

On Tuesday, nearly half the departing and arriving flights at Zurich airport were canceled. Switzerland's Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research estimated that 200 cm had fallen in the northern Alps by Tuesday.

Germany, Italy
The heavy snowfall caused numerous traffic accidents in southern Germany, where four people were killed. A massive pileup forced authorities to close the main highway between Munich and Salzberg, Austria.

A railway worker was killed in Italy's Valle d'Aosta region after he was run over by a train while clearing snow from the tracks. Train service from Florence to Bologna was closed.

In France, another avalanche blocked rail lines around Chamonix, forcing the closure of the Mont Blanc tunnel to Italy and services to Switzerland.

Snow derailed a Venice-bound train from Paris in the region of Busancon earlier on Tuesday. There were no injuries, but all 760 passengers were evacuated from the region.

Several highways were also closed and avalanche warnings posted throughout the French Alps. Residents were advised to remain indoors.
