It doesn't deter crime in the US because it is not applied consistantly. Some countries (Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, China) that use it report it works as a deterrent, but there is not data to support that in the US.

The only way capital punishment can help to deter crime is if it is used (often) and doesn't involve a million and six appeals. It's a joke in this country because most states don't have the death penalty and those who do have an appeals process that can drag out for more than 20 years. Heck, a lot of the scumbags on death row die of natural causes before their appeals are exhausted. The idea of capital punishment in and of itself is effective for reducing crime because people will definitely think twice about committing a crime that could get them a death sentence, but again, private citizens have to see that their government is serious about using it and not giving killers, rapists, or child molesters any and every excuse in the world to have their sentence stayed, delayed, commuted, etc.
We live in a country of wimps (with the possible exception of Texas) because we don't want to truly hold people accountable for their actions and somehow feel that sentencing someone to death makes us no better than the murderers. Not true. A person who kills another person without just cause has put himself/herself in the position of God, believing he/she has the right to decide whether another person lives or dies. That type of person presents a danger to everyone. You get people who say "I don't know what happened -- I just snapped, but I'm very sorry and I'll never do it again." How do we know that person won't just "snap" and kill someone again? ANSWER: We don't. Capital punishment is necessary to protect law-abiding citizens against those who are so selfish and so callous that they wouldn't (and don't) think twice about killing someone else.
Sorry, got on my soapbox for a while, but you have a good topic. Stick with the ideas of deterring crime and serving the public interests of justice (let the punishment fit the crime) and protecting the majority of the people from those select few that think they can do whatever they want to whomever they want with no consideration of the harm they may do to others.

A main argument for the use of capital punishment is that it acts as a deterrent to those who may wish to commit murder and other heinous crimes. While on its face this argument seems to make sense, it doesn;t hold water under closer scrutiny as those states who execute the most criminals (such as Texas) have some of the highest rates of violent crime in the country, while those that don't or use it infrequently (such as CT, where I live) have much lower rates of violent crime. I would research rates of violent crime in each state, those with and without capital punishment, since 1976 (when capital punishment was again declared permissible by the Supreme Court) and see if you can see any patterns emerge. (This info. can be found online or in sources such as the World Almanac, etc.) I'm sure you will. I'm also confident you will see this pattern emerge in other countries that have the death penalty. Good luck with your speech.

Capital punishment is a natural deterrent although people try to cite that it isn't. We will never know how many people didn't commit crimes because of the possibility of death. An example i heard on TV was that if on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday if you committed a crime and would be sentenced to death. You better believe that most of the crimes would take place on the other days.

Not at all. It will help to bring down the crime rate to certain extent..but not completely. Only .1% of the criminals are getting capital punishment rest of the 99.9% are escaping from the punishment with the help of power and money. In this case judiciary is helpless as it only depends in evidence not in the truth. As every one knows that no one is born as criminal but the circumstances in which one is born and brought up are responsible for it. So we have to change the circumstances first inorder to cut down the crime rate

No. impossible. You can minimise by punishment.
It is human tendency to tell lies/dishonesty. But all are not criminals. It is also the Society in which the person is going. Bad friends association can turn a good friend into criminals.
It is vulgar movies which makes a person to go for crimes.
Billa and Ranga the two criminals were made by violent movies in which they showed how to steal the cars.
Auto Shankar became a criminal by seeing a bad example. movie

Think of this scenario: Imagine a country that immediately executed anyone who commited ANY crime, no matter how minor. Let's say, even something like shoplifting carried a death penalty. I think a country like that would be virtually crime-free. The question is, would you want to live there?

I don't think that is true. States, like Texas, that use capital punishment liberally, say it is a deterrent. But then you would see the number of people on death row decline, because it is deterring those types of crimes. But instead, you see increases on the number of inmates on death row.

I don't really believe that it deters crime. Crime has gone up again, especially here in the U.S.. I think if we did things like other countries do, (punishment), then they may be deterred.

First that this was abolished by Jesus Christ saying that we must love our enemies..Those who use this belong to an ancient age,,,Second that ..I think on the contary ..it increases...because the sinners are doing sin for revenge sometimes so..they use to take reveange..and it is obviously that there are people who even kill themselves for a cause they think is right...although is a blasphemy to kill...and even to kill yourself....So first of all ..the capital punishment is a blasphemy and a sin (''You shall not kill''- says one of God commandements )..and the rest of it ..doesn't matter...
