You probably refer to hubris.
Hubris has the meaning you mention but only against the divine order of things!
Excessive pride, was the sort of thing Zeus zaps you for.
Hubris in ancient (and still in modern) Greece actually means "to intentionally diminish another's honor." The hubris used then was more inclined towards an insult.
