Alexander was born in Macedonia to King Phillip of Macedon.

He came to the throne at the age of 16, got many of the Greek city-states behind him and went on to conquer much of the known world (although he didn't make it as far east as China). When he conquered the Persian Empire, he made it his center of activities. He was on his way back from a foray into Indian territory, when he was struck down by an ailment (there is speculation about the nature of his disease, but no definitive answer), weakened and died at the age of 32.

Not only was Alexander a brilliant tactician, by all accounts he was very charismatic and lead an army of highly motivated soldiers.

After his death, his kingdom was divied up. One of his generals was Ptolemy, who went to Alexandria and founded the last pharoanic dynasty in Egypt.
