My wife plays a troll shaman and she isn't squishy in combat. She likes playing as a tank (though a well-played shaman will never be as good of a tank as a well-played warrior). Note that a shaman starts with leather armor, but at level 40 they can wear mail. Warrior can start with mail and go on to plate, but I just want to let you know that shaman can wear all but the heaviest armor. Yeah, warriors can use more weapon types, but really you only need 1 or 2 weapons as a melee character. All is better, but 1 or 2 will get the bulk of the work done. If you are just starting out, I would suggest warrior, as shaman is more of a finesse class. Both have important skills to master to be effective in your job...warrior is more critical but probably easier to learn. Shaman are more versatile so you need to learn your character well to find your limits.

The best answer several have given is to try them both. However, you can make the process a lot easier and faster by just asking yourself a few questions.
Such as what type of player are you? Are you a full blown melee class that likes to be in the thick of everything? Then warrior is the way to go. Shamans can do this to a lesser extent, however Shamans have ranged ability, healing, and totems that provide a variety of effects warriors don't have.
Shamans are a more complex class, so if you don't like that kind of thing, then again, go for the warrior.
I would personally choose the Shaman because they have more versatility. They can tank fairly well and their totems and healing are great. Yeah they lack the armor of a warrior but they make up for this with their healing ability and totems.
Warriors also, as someone mentioned, must rely on bandages and food to heal themselves, so it can get frustrating trying to solo with them.
Another helpful question to ask would be do you tend to solo more, or group up more? (Talking up to like 30-40, after that you're hitting instances a LOT more and partying up becomes more of a factor, especially if you're a constant instance-runner.)
If you like partying up, go Warrior. Groups are ALWAYS looking for two classes. Tanks (Warriors preferred) and healers (Priests preferred.) Since the Shaman falls under both categories but to a smaller extent in both, partying becomes a bit more difficult for Shamans, since they're expected to heal usually, and if you're not specced for it... your party is going to get frustrated with you if you stray from that role (not to mention the Totems can pull more than you want.)
So it's a toss up. Sure you can play both to level 15 or so and see which you like better, but in truth pretty much all the classes don't really get going until 20 or so, which means you could be wasting your time trying them both when you could just concentrate on one.
Do some research. Check www.thottbot.com and look over the skills each gets, read the class forums and see what people are saying about each class, and go from there. Ultimately, they are both good classes, but play what you think will be the most fun for you. You're not shelling out 15 bucks a month to hate playing your character after all ;)

Well itll will all depend on how u play warriors are harder to level then most chars they relie on weapons armor and gear more then any other char, they have no way to heal themselves other then potions food and first aid were shamans have some healing abilites. Try both play them to about level 15 or so ull get a good idea how each plays.

I agree with rockon, try making 2 of them and playing one all day and then the other. Whichever one your most comfortable with choose it because that could become your best class in the game. Anyways good luck dude, im a former Tauren Shaman and Undead Warlock. :)

Much of a shaman's career consists of healing from what I have seen.

If you would rather fight than heal, I'd go with Warrior.

I chose to be a warrior, and they get a ranged weapon (the gun I think) but it isn't the farthest reaching weapon. I found the shaman to be too squishy in close combat, died too easily for my liking.
