i don't understand why they don't just get a more plain looking actress to play a part which obviously demands the lead isn't too pretty. It's similar when they get a younger actress to play an old person's part and spend hours making them up rather than get an old person. What is the point ?

Its classic Hollywood hypocrisy -- even their ugly people are beautiful -- they don't even understand their own show -- you're dead right, a real ugly person should play the role, but they're afraid that people would not want to watch, horror of horrors, an actual real ugly person -- if it was a male role, I think they might dare, there's plenty of less than ideal looking male actors, somehow women aren't allow to anything but beautiful (unless they're a particularly evil villain)

Possibly because people could see she's not really ugly and that she could be pretty if she did her hair differently, lost the glasses, and dressed differently. They'll probably do a durastic make over on her and give all the "ugly" girls inspiration. Or maybe that's over thinking it and they just did based on talent. With the younger people playing older if it's in the movie that the person grows old it's easier to do the make up than to find a talented actor or actress that looks similar to the person playing the role of the younger person.

How many actresses have you seen that are naturally ugly? If they start out with any imperfections, the plastic surgeons fix them pretty quickly. The point is that the producers want the current favorite actress to draw in the crowds. The make up is cheap compared to the loss of money if they use an actress who don't have a large fan base. It is about making money.

It might just be personal tastes- I personally don't think America Ferrara, who plays Ugly Betty, is THAT gorgeous or anything. I think she's an average-looking girl. If they had picked an actual ugly girl to play Ugly Betty, there would have been a public outrage because it would seem that they were picking on ugly people because of the show's name. This way because we all know she's not really ugly in real life, we can all be in on the joke, kind of like that time Gwyneth Paltrow wore the fat suit for Shallow Hal, and we could all have a good laugh because we know she weighs approximately as much as a #2 pencil in real life. In that case, if a real fat chick had played the fat girl, we would have felt ashamed of ourselves for laughing at all the fat jokes. See what I mean?

Its a TV show fantasy. Its camp and comedy. Its not supposed to be analyzed and taken seriously. America Ferrera will never be a lead on Grey's Anatomy, or the lead in a romantic comedy starring Jude Law, she is not typical Hollywood beauty. So she gets to play a part that can possibly change the way people view others based on looks. So what? I am happy this great actress has a job, she deserves it and she is doing a GREAT job.

when did they get rid of America Fererra and replace her with an attractive girl? I know when the show first aired with Fererra in the lead, they cast an actress that fit the title role, but I'm wondering when they got rid of her. Who's the new actress?

I love the way when Americans 'ugly' up a person it normally involves glasses and/or braces!! It must give some women such a complex.

Americans hate to use ugly people in their shows, look at Lost as an example. You could believe they were all on their way to a modelling convention....well apart from the English dude..surprise surprise.

Because it's Hollywood and a real ugly girl wouldn't get past security at a studio. And to that mindset, putting glasses, braces and dowdy clothes on a pretty girl qualifies her as ugly. I'm none too comfortable with someone being described as ugly either.

Because she is a good actress and that is just part of the show!! If she was really ugly they would probably pick her too, because she can act! She agreed to be uglied up, that is just part of the show!!!

Probably so they can do a makeover at the end of the show and do a
'Look! Betty's not ugly any more, she's gorgeous! And Daniel will stop his womanising ways and settle down with her because she's just so stunning' episode.
That's my guess, anyway.
