I was dragged out of my closet during high school by a fellow gay friend. He didn't know how to come out, so instead he outed ME to see how it would go. Not very nice, but it happened, and I only lost a few 'friends' because of it. Oh, well. I don't really want anyone around me who'd have a problem with who I truly am. My family had a little difficulty at first, but they weren't shocked. They discovered in time that it was my life - not some phase. In time, people get over themselves because they realize in time that they cannot change you, so they must accept you if there's going to be any relationship at all. You just have to stay firm and they will come around. Screw em if they don't.

Actually made us closer, in regards to my family. As far as friends, well if they weren't all that close of friends, I didn't care. My close friends were totally fine with it and we've had no difficulties. If anything, it's opened up a whole new area of friends.

I was 27. Family was chilly at first, but everything was just fine after a couple of years. They really had no choice but to come around, if they wanted me in their lives. I'm glad they did.

My mom was really upset, but I'd been disappointing her for a long time because I wasn't the perky, popular, ambitious girl she was as a teen.
My friends from Christian youth group either avoided me or saw me as a project.
The rest of my friends, after initial surprise, were very cool about it. My best friend was also bi (we're still best friends).

with friends - no problem, they were all fine.
with family - my sisters were totally fine, but my parents took a while. at first, they were really angry. but now (8 years later) they're totally fine. they both came to my (same sex) wedding, helped with the planning/money for it, my dad walked me down the aisle, my mom danced the night away! it was an amazing day. so, i guess people CAN change. :)

It was nice to not have an "elephant in the room". I did cut off all republican members of my family, but otherwise it's been great.
