do a search for people with interests common to you, such as a book, or favorite movie. look at their page, and if you are sure they aren't some weirdo, you can maybe add them.

There are also groups, which may be a better option.

MySpace isn't a popularity contest. More friends doesn't mean you're better or whatever. I have 35 friends on MySpace and I'm pretty sure I'm not a loser.

But anyway, just search for people who like stuff that you like.
