Would anyone have any suggestions of some meaningful songs for teenagers to listen to as part of a listening activity in class? Something like "The voice within" by Christina Aguilera and "That's what dreams are made of" by Hilary Duff. Thanks!

Perfect by Alanis Morisette - from her Jagged Little Pill album (or Jagged Little Pill Acoustic released 2005)

It's about the pressures parents put on kids and there are no objectionable lyrics. I used it in my 8th grade advisement class.

» Perfect «
Sometimes is never quite enough
If you're flawless, then you'll win my love
Don't forget to win first place
Don't forget to keep that smile on your face
Be a good boy
Try a little harder
You've got to measure up
And make me prouder

How long before you screw it up
How many times do I have to tell you to hurry up
With everthing I do for you
The least you can do is keep quiet
Be a good girl
You've gotta try a little harder
That simply wasn't good enough
To make us proud

I'll live through you
I'll make you what I never was
If you're the best, then maybe so am I
Compared to him compared to her
I'm doing this for youre own damn good
You'll make up for what I bled
What's the problem...why are you crying

Be a good boy
Push a little farther now
That wasn't fast enough
To make us happy
We'll love you just the way you are if you're perfect

What message do you want them to gather?

We Didn't Start the Fire by Billy Joel is a great historical song
Cat's in the Cradle by Cat Stevens is good for family relationships

Most of my suggestions would be old songs. You don't have to worry as much about inappropriate language.

Alanis Morrisette, jagged little pill...It's so angry and raw. She made that album during a very hard time in her life.
It really related to me as a Teen, as I was quite an angry teenager (like many, many others)...I knew I wasn't alone. It helped me accept that s**t happens!

Now in my mid 20's...I love Air, it's quite relaxing but quirky! And Damien Rice..his lyrics are genius.

How about one of the older songs like Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now - our younger children thought it was great, perhaps older ones would do as well
