I've been dating this great guy for about 6 months who is originally from Ghana, but hasn't lived there in over 20 years. Everything was great until I met his mom a month ago - she's not too happy about the relationship because I'm not African, and sadly it is beginning to affect the relationship because he values his mom's opinion. What's your take on this - should I run for the hills? It doesn't help that I don't speak the language so of course I have no idea what she says about me when she talks to him.

I hope this doesn't make you think of all African are like that!
first of all, the country he from, i think that's their tradition, and not all African country have that tradition, like for me I'm from Liberia, its in west Africa, and we don't believe in all that tradition stuff. If he really like you he wont listen to his mom and her tradition,

People worry when they feel they are left out of a chat because of language barrier but you don't have to bother. You don't understand what says so why bother to find out?We Africans pamper in-laws a lot so i think she feels you might not treat her like a true African will.Do your best to avoid her trouble. Some in-laws can be very inquisitive, their sons/daughters are always right .You can tell her that you can her to teach you her language, that will be a step in establishing a strong relationship.
