I own a 2000 Ford Focus, and recently the check engine light started to come on and its giving the code engine too lean. Well, thus far my dad and I have been working on it. We've replaced both oxygen sensors, the gas cap, and the air filter. My dad cleaned the mass air flow sensor, and checked the car for vaccum leaks. None of this has been sucessful in fixing it. Any suggestions? Websites with information would be very helpful, and just for the record I do not trust any of the mechanics where I live. When they see a girl come in with a problem, they try to screw her out of every dollar she has.

I neglected to mention that the computer was reset after every part was replaced, to no avail. The light comes back on after a few days.

The first thing, after all you have done is to check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail There is a Schrader ( looks like a tire valve stem) valve for pressure with the engine running. Check with your local library for a Ford manual for the proper pressure. I think it should be 35#. If the fuel pressure is good, it might be a good idea to change the filter. (fuel) If the pressure is ok clean the MAF sensor. Do it gently. Can be damaged by rough handling. This should give a code all it's own..Is it idling rough??If it is remove and clean or replace the EGR valve..The MAF sensor is the main control for fuel. It sends info to the computer measuring the air flow. It measures the air and the computer sends a signal to the injectors for a specific amount of fuel for the air flow..The Oxygen sensor fine tunes the fuel to a more finite condition...........MAF Mass air flow sensor..EGR Exhaust Gas Recirculating valve...........Did your Dad reset the computer???If not it can be done, on a Ford, by removing the battery cable for a few minutes.....Hope I am some help.!

If your fuel is running lean, then you have way to much air in your gas/air mixture. You may want to look into that. Now, I'm not sure how to do it. But my husband ans his friends work on cars all of the time. My husband goes as far as hooking up the car to our laptop and runs tests on the car (because it's got some stuff done to it) and when it runs lean, it has too much air in the ratio (again). There is something that a mechanic can do with a computer program that can fix that and not make it run so lean.
Hope this helps a little bit.

Summer S gave an excellent answer.
Too lean means the exhaust has more oxygen that was necessary, or not enough fuel was used.
If the MAP/MAF sensor chas checked out fine, then I'd be looking at replacing things like.
1. Fuel Filter. (A clogged fuel filter prevents enough pressure to inject the proper amount of fuel)
2. Clogged fuel injectors. (Try running a few bottles of fuel injection cleaner through the gas tank, this will at least attempt to clean the injectors)
Other possibilities also include fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator.

summer s and buzwalt are both full of sh#$.......... try changing the mass airflow sensor... even though is clean it may still not be working properly. there is a voltage range that it is supposed to operate at (usually between 1 to 4.???) if it dosent reach its full range it could come up as a lean code. the only way to test this is with an oscilliscope.i can assume you dont have one so you cant test it but i dont think theyre too expensive so try changing it.i had one recently that only went to 3.8 volts, changed it and the new one went to 4.3... dosent seem like much but it made a world of difference. did your dad check to see if the intake gaskets were ok... its kinda hard to check if their leaking but its a common problem with those plastic intakes ----- by the way fuel pressure is only about 7 # and factory computers are not progammable

Have you switching gasolines back and forth lately. I meant: from regular unleaded to Unleaded plus or Super unleaded then back to regular again? If you did then that was your problem: the computer management system tried to adjust the grade fuel by adjusting itself for the air/ fuel mixtute. When it finally get it to work then grade fuel change again, the computer is trying to adjust but with a last error code still in the system caused a faulty errors. Try to use one grade of fuel for a week see if this will solve the problem. Good luck.

Check the mass air flow sensor. If its not working properly it will not let the correct amount of air mix with fuel. These sensors are not usually too expensive and fairly easy to replace. Good Luck!

Try to unplug the battery and then plug it back. Hopefully the light will go off and then you should sell your car. You made a mistake by buying Ford. They suck.
