It is for moisturizing a baby's skin. When babies are born they begin to lose the natural lubrication from being in the mother's womb. So baby oil is used to restore that moisture on a daily basis. Some people (myself included) don't really like to apply it to the skin because if you apply too much it can make the baby feel kinda greasy. I never used it on my daughter's skin, I would just pour a small amount (probably about 2 Tbs) into her bath water and that would work about the same. Then I would just put baby lotion (Burt's Bees Baby Bee) all over her. Baby oil is also used for cradle cap. My daughter had it so bad she lost almost all of her hair. You put it in her hair after a bath and then comb the hair close to the scalp. That will help speed up the process of cradle cap (although it won't be an instant fix). I always kept a wet washcloth close by so that after combing I could wipe her hair to get some of the grease out. Hope it helps....

Lubrication. How else are you going to squeeze that baby into the cage? :-P

I jest. In addition to helping a baby's dry skin (its stated purpose), it can be used for a number of things. Getting a stuck ring off your finger, removing a bandage painlessly, as massage oil, as part of a body bath, to get scratches off of a plastic dashboard, or treat a baby's "cradle cap," amongst other things.

Lubricating skin. Babies have extremely sensitive skin, rubbing to clean them for example can create a rash if you don't take care to lubricate the skin. Some adults use it for similar purposes.

Yes, for dry skin. I don't like it cuz it's too messy, I only used it for cradle cap on my child. I use it more often for myself as an eye makeup remover.
