Have you noticed that the Earth is full of billions of people, but some of them are still alone?
Whether or not there is life elsewhere in the universe, we are alone.
Unless someone visits us (openly) or communicates with us, we might as well be alone even if every star out there has life.
With current technology we cannot get to the nearest star within 20,000 years. Even with the most optimistic estimate (that chances of life developing in every system = 1 ), the chances of a star with life worth contacting being in our vicinity at **this point in the history of the universe** are MINUSCULE.
(Think about it - our planet has been around for 4600 million years, but humans have only been around for the last 1 million and most of that time we were effectively apes. Anyone who visited us in the preceding 4599000000 years would have been disappointed if they were hoping for someone to talk to).
Are aliens secretly visiting us?
Well that's like having someone visit you while you're asleep - you're not actually alone, but you don't get to meet anyone, so you remain effectively alone.

I hope not, although I consider it just as possible as being completely alone. The problem is that we haven't even found a speck of life on another planet. Also, this speck would have to be confirmed as an independent genesis of life for it to be significant (beyond orbit of Mars). If we find life on one of the moons of Jupiter or elsewhere then I will get my hopes up. The problem is that George Bush has influenced NASA to abandon trips to Jupiter's moons and the launch of the Terrestrial Planet Finder (detector of earth-like planets around other stars).

No, the Universe is just too big for Earth to be the only planet to have life on it.

It's very unlikely. There are billions of planets out there, and surely there is life on one of them.

I don't think so. I'm sure that somewhere, out there, is someplace which contains life forms.
